What a great time! Dave & Tony W, Andres & DJ, and Tony U and I rafted the Lower New River near Fayetteville, West Virginia, on July 16, 2005. Dating back at least 65 million years, it's one of the oldest rivers in North America with its oldest exposed rocks being 330 million years old. The New River Gorge is known as ‘The Grand Canyon of the East’ and is the second most-challenging commercially-available whitewater rafting spot in the United States. The New River Gorge Bridge was an awesome sight! We used Raft West Virginia, which also provided the camping site for the weekend. The weekend was marred only by the intermittent rain, loud campsite music (at 2am! by the rafting guides!), scalding hot showers, and clogged toilets. (Who said we wanted to "rough it?")
