Martial Arts Training

For a larger photograph, click on the small picture below.

Since 1999, I have trained in a variety of martial arts styles, primarily Tukong Moosul, Tae Kwon Do, judo, CDT (see my CDT website for more information), some Hapkido, and some weapons. I've trained primarily at the American Tukong Martial Arts Academy and SportJudo. Here are some of my favorite photos.

Advancement through the ranks (belts) of Tukong Moosul requires belt promotion tests that involve kicking, punching, Hapkido holds and take-downs, and weapons such as double staff (top, second from left) and nunchaku (second row, first and second photos.) After the tests, we would often pose with Tukong Grandmaster In Ki Kim. (Bottom row.)

In order to achieve a black belt in Tukong Moosul, students must first earn their black belts in Tae Kwon Do, Judo, and Hapkido. Here my best buddy Kennon Brown and I are testing for our Tae Kwon Do black belts by Grandmaster In Ki Kim and Senior Instructor Jimmy Higgins in October 2001.

Tukong students are also expected to participate in Tae Kwon Do tournaments, such as the H. K. Lee National Capital Open. I participated as a green belt in 2001 (first two photos) and as a black belt. Best buddy Kennon Brown was my coach!

One of the real pleasures of my life was the nine months I spent as a full-time martial arts school business manager and Tae Kwon Do assistant instructor. Here are some of my after school Tae Kwon Do kids!

In January 2003, I started training judo with 7th degree black belt and former Olympian Maurice Allan at SportJudo. In my first year, we had an "intramural" judo tournament. I actually got a clean throw (scored as an "ippon")! See the stop-action photo, number three above..
