After
I completed the ASGRA rodeo
school (and in the process appeared
in a Discovery Times Channel TV program),
I finally competed in my first rodeo
on September 10 & 11, 2005. (See
my rodeo school photos!)
No bullriding this first time out.
Instead I competed in calf roping on
foot and chute-dogging, which is like
judo with 400-pound steers. Since the
original head of rodeo security was
deployed to assist with search and
rescue operations with Hurricane Katrina,
a few days before the rodeo I found
myself head of rodeo security. So I
had my hands full and could only compete
the second day of competition. Still,
I had an awesome time.
Here are photos of me with my dude
Tony, practicing for calf roping, with
my buddy Bill, just barely missing
the head of my calf, couple of photos
of my rodeo school buddies who actually
did ride bulls, and me in the dirt
wrestling a steer. I fell down before
crossing the white line (which starts
the timer) -- but got back up and wrestled
my steer down quick enough to come
in eighth out of 26. For my first time
out! Maybe I'll ride a bull next year! For a larger photograph, click

my first chutedogging effort --
not pretty, but I got the
job done! I even got an "instant
replay..." (Video clip
was part of cable TV show
produced by Hero
Unit Productions --
where you can purchase
the full DVD of the 2005
Atlantic Stampede!)
